Washing.
It is not gross to wash the cloth diapers and no, the poo does not get on all of your other clothes through the washer. It does smell if you let them sit for too long however. So far since her business is pretty harmless, we have the following wash routine:
1. dump all the diapers and bag in the washer
2. put a scoop of Rockin' Green detergent in the compartment
3. set washer to "heavy duty" and select prewash and second rinse
4. hit start
5. dry on warm
6. hang any diapers with staining on clothesline
I use a ribbon as a clothesline since I don't have twine! (I also haven't had any diapers that were in need of some sun this week...I waited and tried and almost faked it for the photo, but I needed the diapers in her drawer.)
It is super easy. Since I am home all day it is not hard to wash this stuff every other day or so. It takes a little time to stuff pockets, but no more time than it takes to say, fold a shirt.
Thats it! So far I love them. Caroline has mostly avoided diaper rash, though she did get a bout of it once she started sleeping through the night (for 8-10 hours) at 8 weeks.
Speaking of sleeping, I have her in a disposable still at night. I had been using a one-size funnibunz pocket, which worked great when she was only sleeping for 4-5 hours at a stretch. However, on our trip to Atlanta at age 8 weeks to the day, Caroline slept 8 hours. We did not bring cloth on this trip. Since then, I am scared to put a cloth diaper on her at night because I value this new sleep too much, and the plastic diapers are soooooo absorbant. So for the past week and a half, we have used the disposables at night. I hope to get my courage back soon and switch, but like anything else with a new baby, you do what you can when you can.
She just looks so cute in her Bumgenious.
And a big shout out to the Donnellan ladies for ordering me some new Bumgenious! I cannot wait for them to arrive :)
